This may seem like the strangest thing ever, but I enjoy the occasional boxing movie. I think it brings back a time when I would spend time with my dad and chat about the great champs. There is nothing quite like a down and out person who fights against all odds to make it. Arguably, the most famous boxing movie is Rocky and that in itself is a story that inspires us, not just for the movie, but for Sylvester Stalonés journey to fame through is an unrelenting pursuit to star in the movie that he had written.
But my passion is for movies about real people who have overcome real obstacles.
One such movie is Cinderella Man. In the 1920s, James Braddock played by Russell Crowe suffers a hand injury, which knocks his boxing career. The movie takes place during the Great Depression in America and that makes it more real to many of us who have seen the economy take a turn.
In times like these many people could not even afford to care for their children, a fate which terrifies the average mother. This movie is one that you can watch with your hubby and it certainly can instil a sense of hope and personal power in most men.
I find that the female character is initially rather timid, as her approach is based on fear. But she certainly makes a comeback and goes full out in the support of her husband.
In hard times, the level of humiliation people face when they are trying to regain dignity is unbearable to watch. But it is these rare individuals
who have the tenacity to face humiliation, obstacles and ridicules the face and declare "This too I shall overcome"" that makes us root for the underdog and celebrate together when they succeed.
Decide today to be your own cheerleader and not to be discouraged by those who do not or can not share your vision.
